Camillus (Marcus Furius)

He was later put in charge of the Roman army in the war against Faliscans. The Faliscan main city of Falerii was not an Etruscan city but often allied itself with Veii. However, there was no plunder to be had at Falerii (the Faliscans voluntarily surrendered to the Romans and were forced to pay 1 year’s wages to the Roman army). Looking for some kind of payment, land redistribution or the populating of Veiian land, the Plebeians were denied. Camillus joined in resisting their demands. Consequently, his enemies accused and condemned him of embezzlement and he was ordered to pay a large fine. Camillus chose exile instead.

He was residing at Ardea as a private citizen when a Roman army was defeated at Allia by the Gauls. The Gauls then sacked Rome. They sustained themselves by raiding local farms and cities. In the process of this raiding, the Gauls marched on Ardea. Camillus organized the city’s citizens and after a night raid destroyed the Gallic contingent. He then marched on Rome and fought the Gallic occupiers in the streets. The next day he defeated them outside the city walls.

Camillus subsequently led Roman armies against the Latins, Aequi and Volsci. He also defeated the Gauls a second time. In 365 BC, a plague struck Rome and Camillus, now an old man, was carried away.
